Ibn Ashur's approach to doctrinal issues and ambiguous texts

Abstract

This research examines the methodology of Imam Muhammad al-Tahir ibn Ashur in dealing with doctrinal issues and the verses of ambiguity in his exegesis, "Al-Tahrir wa al-Tanwir." The methodology highlights Ibn Ashur's keenness to reconcile the apparent meaning of the Quranic text with the demands of reason, following a middle path that combines authenticity and renewal. In addressing theological issues, Ibn Ashur relies on the rules of the Arabic language and the objectives of Islamic law, avoiding involvement in narrow sectarian disputes. Regarding the issue of ambiguous verses, he leans towards an acceptable interpretation that negates anthropomorphism and affirms the perfection of divine attributes, without excessive theological interpretation or rigid adherence to the literal meaning. He also seeks to liberate theology from philosophical complexities, presenting it in a framework that strengthens faith and guides towards righteous deeds. This study demonstrates the significant impact of his teleological and linguistic awareness in formulating a balanced doctrinal vision, making his exegesis a unique reference in contemporary Islamic thought.
