Abstract

This research explores the Reading of Muslimah ibn Muhārib and its Impact on Qur’anic Interpretation. Muslimah ibn Muhārib was a little-known reciter from Basra in the second century AH, noted for his distinct linguistic and grammatical insights reflected in his variant readings. The study adopts the inductive method to collect his reported readings from classical sources, and the analytical method to explain their linguistic and exegetical implications.

The findings show that his readings — such as “waba‘ulatuhunna aḥaqqu biraddihinna” with a quiescent tā’, “wa idh ya‘idukum Allāh” with a quiescent dāl, and “madkhalan” without gemination — reveal subtle grammatical and rhetorical nuances that enrich Qur’anic meaning.

The research concludes that non- canonical (shādhdh) readings, though not recited as part of the canonical Qur’an, constitute a valuable linguistic and exegetical resource that highlights the expressive diversity and eloquence of the Qur’anic text.
